Why Remove a Gyro Stabilizer?

While gyro stabilizers provide significant comfort improvement, there are legitimate reasons for removal:

Removal Process

1

Pre-Removal Assessment

Before touching the unit, we document:

  • Unit model, serial number, and run hours
  • Current structural condition around foundation
  • Electrical disconnection points and wire routing
  • Cooling system isolation plan
  • Crane/lift requirements based on unit weight
Weight Reference: SK2 = 218 lbs · SK6 = 365 lbs · SK9 = 485 lbs · SK16 = 720 lbs · SK18 = 850 lbs · SK26 = 1,200 lbs · SK35 = 1,650 lbs · SK40 = 2,100 lbs
2

Safe Decommissioning

Proper shutdown sequence to prevent rotor damage and personal injury:

  • Controlled spin-down (never brake a spinning rotor)
  • Electrical lockout/tagout
  • Coolant drain and capture
  • Foundation bolt torque release in star pattern
  • Rigging and lift with rated straps/chains
Safety Critical: A spinning gyro rotor stores enormous kinetic energy. Never attempt removal with rotor spinning. Always verify complete stop before unbolting.
3

Hull Reinfill

The foundation cutout must be properly sealed to restore hull integrity:

  • Small units (SK2–SK9): ~10–14" diameter cutout. Reinfill with GRP or carbon fiber laminate, matching original hull thickness + safety margin
  • Medium units (SK16–SK18): ~16–20" cutout. Requires structural core replacement and tabbing to adjacent stringers
  • Large units (SK26–SK40): ~24–30" cutout. Naval engineering review recommended. FEA analysis for composite hulls
4

Weight Rebalancing

Removing 200–2,000 lbs from the vessel changes trim, stability, and running attitude:

  • Recalculate longitudinal center of gravity (LCG)
  • Adjust trim tabs or interceptor settings
  • Verify static stability (GM) with new weight distribution
  • Sea trial to validate running attitude at cruise RPM

What Happens to the Removed Unit?

Options depend on unit condition and model:

We do not sell used gyros or broker units. We provide independent condition assessment if you choose to sell independently.

Planning a Gyro Removal?

We provide independent removal planning — structural, crane, electrical, and sea-trial — with a written plan you can use with any yard.
